Well known Toronto based cyclist and coach Ilija Petrovski was involved in a serious accident while riding north of Oshawa on Monday. According to news reports, 2 dogs ran out onto the road and while he was able to avoid one, collided with the other and went down hard, hitting his head.

Petrovski is currently in the Intensive care unit at Sunnybrook hospital after brain surgery and in an induced coma . The next few days are critical!!!

Scott Judges puts it this way and I cannot think of a better phrasing:

"Illya could use as much positive energy and best wishes from as many fellow cyclists as possible."

However you need to understand the NEW system – Tee Hee.

First you will be delighted to know that we have a new Membership Secretary – yes, Victor has moved on to bigger and better things and we thank him for his many years of faithful service to the club. Consistent with the Peter Principle, as learned in business school - by which people are promoted until they reach their level of incompetence - he will become our new Race Secretary.

DO NOT HENCEFORTH ADDRESS ANY MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONS TO VICTOR – HE WILL BITE YOUR HEAD OFF.

A big thanks also to Phil Harper on his retirement from the position of Race Secretary and for the many years of enjoyable events that he organized for us. He promises to return to racing if Victor’s handicapping for group 1 is overly generous.

So, you will henceforth deal only with our new Membership Secretary – Chris Raynor – who, as a logistics expert is ideally qualified for the position even though his only cycling qualifications are that he can almost keep up with his 7 year old son – for now. As for his likely disposition when faced with incompetence on the part of prospective members, it remains untested as yet.

Possession of a 2012 Membership Card* is essential to your participation in any Eagles events after December 31, 2011. You should also note that any early season group rides that might occur before everyone has got their act together and obtained their memberships are NOT INSURED.

You will have two methods of applying for your Eagles Membership for 2012 and one of them may even work:

1. ON-LINE PROCESS

Details will be posted on the Membership page of the website (www.newmarketeagles.com) soon. You will be able to complete the membership and waiver forms and pay on-line with your credit card.

2. BY DOWN-LOADING THE FORMS FROM THE WEBSITE AND SENDING THEM TO CHRIS RAYNOR

1. The 2012 Membership Forms are on the Membership page of www.newmarketeagles.com.

2. You need to complete BOTH the NECC membership form AND the OCA waiver form.

3. You can fill in the Membership Form on the screen. Then print both forms off.

4. Read the instructions they contain, before attempting the actual completion of the forms.

5. The forms cannot be submitted on-line or brought to any event (race, group ride, etc...) and must be mailed-in as per instructions on the Membership Form. As one alternative, you may deposit your application in Chris’ mailbox.

6. If you do not complete the form on the screen, you need to complete it LEGIBLY, using your best penmanship.

7. You must complete ALL FIELDS including the NEW SECTIONS on Emergency Contacts and Volunteering.

8. If you do not fully and legibly complete the forms they will not be processed by Chris. Depending on his disposition on any given day, he may pursue you for corrections, or may ignore you until prompted with a terse question such as: “where’s my *****membership card?”

9. Submit your cheque in the CORRECT $AMOUNT payable to Newmarket Eagles Cycling Club (i.e. just as written here).

10. If you have an OCA (UCI) race licence and want to claim a discounted membership fee, you MUST include a photocopy of your licence.

11. If you do not yet have your OCA licence you need to submit the FULL membership fee ($55) and when you get your licence, send a photocopy of it to Chris who will issue a refund as stated on the membership form.

*You will receive your new membership package, including Membership Card 2012, as soon as Chris gets the cards from the OCA’s printer. In the meantime, if you have submitted your membership application to Chris and want to participate in an Eagles event, just email him (christopher.raynor@chrobinson.com) and ask if he has received your application and if you are therefore a member in good standing.

This confirmation is conditional upon the Town signing a binding agreement late in January. Prior to signing a binding agreement, Milton Town Council has commissioned the completion of a business plan and due diligence process completed by Sierra Planning and Management that will verify that operating impacts and community use and cycling legacy requirements are satisfactory and meet the financial principle associated with this project.

The Town would like to invite all interested cycling stakeholders who could be potential users of the facility to an information session on the Velodrome. Representatives from Infrastructure Ontario, who will be the project managers for the Velodrome, will be in attendance to do a presentation of the proposed conceptual plan and answer any questions. Representatives from TO2015, Sierra Planning and Management and the Town of Milton will also be in attendance. The date of the session is Tuesday, January 10th from 4-8pm. The formal presentation will take place at 4pm and repeated again at 6pm. The session will take place at the Milton Sports Centre in the Optimist Room and is located at 605 Santa Maria Boulevard.

At the session on January 10th, contact information for interested parties will be collected and interviews will be arranged for January 12th either daytime or evening depending on what works well for each group. At the interviews, it is expected that each group be prepared to offer insight into their potential utilization of the facility that will assist in developing the business plan outcomes.

We look forward to your participation on January 10th. It is the cycling community that will be the driving force to ensure the Velodrome is viable and a lasting legacy for many years after the games. Ninety-eight… Ninety-nine… One-hundred Bikes for Cuba!

‒ Barrie couple to transport 100th bike delivered by Canadian tourists ‒

Toronto, ON // On the afternoon of December 22, in line at Pearson Airport three hours before their flight to Cuba, Jacqueline and Ralf Winter will be carrying with them some very special sporting goods luggage. On their way to their Cuban holiday on the beach of Guardalavaca, Jacqueline and Ralf will be transporting a used racing bike, destined for a high school cycling racing program in nearby Banes.

This particular bike is special because it is ‘Nueva bicicleta #100’, the hundredth refurbished racing bike that Jackson’s Point resident - and former Canadian national cycling team member - Jeff Reid has supplied as humanitarian aid to Cuban high school cycling racing programs in Banes, Varadero, Moa and Jaguay Grande, in just two years.

Since Jeff donated his own bike first, while cycling around on holiday in Cuba in December 2009, his personal ‘Bikes for Cuba’ vision has grown. In 2010, helpful Canadian tourists brought 30 bikes down for him. This December 22, 2011 - with the help of Jacqueline and Ralf - Jeff’s dream of one hundred racing bikes delivered to four Cuban communities will be realized.

“One of the most heart-warming aspects of this project, is the ongoing generosity of the cyclists who donate the bikes, the parts, the helmets, shirts and shoes,” says Jeff, “and the willingness of so many Canadian tourists to help out. ‘I couldn’t have done it without them’ would be a huge understatement!”

“Jeff has made this so easy,” says Jacqueline Winter of her special 100th Bikes for Cuba cargo. “It’s the least we can do in return for the great hospitality Cubans show almost a million Canadian tourists every year now. And all the young people who will ride these bikes, will get to see that a bicycle really is a wonderful way to get around, especially in a place as beautiful and safe as Cuba.”

I am writing to ask you to support a private member's bill (sponsored by Parry Sound - Muskoka MPP Norm Miller) to pave all shoulders of provincial roads to a width of 1 metre. This measure would increase cyclist and driver safety and enhance Ontario as an active transportation and cycling tourism destination. With the growing interest in sustainable or "green" tourism- as called for in York Region's Tourism Plan- as well as the need to make our roads safer for everyone, this bill is worthy of all party support.

This is an important piece of legislation for all cyclists. Canadian Cyclist urges every Ontario rider to provide your support for this Bill, by contacting both your local MPP and indicating your support to MPP Norm Miller.

Parry Sound - Muskoka MPP Norm Miller today re-introduced his private member's bill which would enhance public safety for the motoring public and promote active transportation in Ontario.

Miller's bill, if passed, would require a minimum one metre paved shoulder on certain provincially owned highways to improve public safety for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists alike.

Studies in other jurisdictions confirm that where paved shoulders exist, accidents are drastically reduced.

"There are obvious health benefits for the individual and society in general, as we provide more opportunities to cycle and walk for recreation, or for transportation. Active transportation routes and connecting links help to promote tourism. Quebec has proven that."

Studies also show that paved shoulders have improved safety for the motoring public, as well as increased tourism opportunities.

"The response to my private member's bill has been overwhelming," continued Miller. "Ontarians want to enjoy healthy activities in safety. This is a practical and affordable way to support them. This bill just makes sense."

• About 15 to 20 cyclists are killed on Ontario roads every year, with roughly a third in the Greater Toronto Area.
• In October, Ontario's chief coroner began the first ever province-wide investigation into cycling deaths.

That’s why we need people willing to stand for election to our executive positions as well as people who will contribute to the operation of the club in other ways.

- If you benefit from participation in the club’s activities you really should consider participating in its running.

- A good start is to attend the meeting and familiarize yourself with all the stuff that goes into keeping the good ship HMS Eagle afloat – and if you get bored you can always borrow a book from the library.

- As an incentive for attendees, you will be able to designate the group in which you will race the club races in 2012 and will be entitled to a very advantageous one group downgrade.

- And if you can arrive early I would appreciate your help in setting out the chairs.

Our Jack Steinberg on clarinet with accomplished guitarist Harris Mark are playing this Thursday night at the Villa Risi restaurant in Newmarket. They start at 8 PM.

Villa Risi a great restaurant with good food, ambiance, me and Coleen, topped off by Jack and Harris performance. The owner is a superb jazz singer and joins them for a few songs. It's a great way to spend a Thursday evening. The restaurant is at 16995 Yonge Street, on the east side between William Roe and Eagle Street.

Hey gang – we have finally organized our City Buick 3 hr indoor ride again this year. It will be on Dec. 18th at City Buick on Victoria Park – 8 am – 3 hrs of fun (of course).

This will be a fundraiser for Tracy Dort-Kyne – the woman who crashed on Scenic Caves Rd. in Collingwood – she is now a paraplegic and will have millions of dollars of bills over her lifetime. She is a single mom of 3 kids – one has autism – she receives no child support at all! She will need 24/7 home-care since she does not have the use of her limbs below her shoulders – no arms, no legs. She needs to buy an accessible home, accessible vehicle, do lifelong therapy – the list of her needs is long. We just need to do our part – our own little part.

There is no pressure to fundraise – everyone is welcome for $100 each and I wish I could say that it is free for our athletes but this is such a good cause. We're thrilled to announce our Tour with the Pros- Tour de France trips for 2012. We have an Alps trip starting in Beaune, Burgundy and finishing in Grenoble; a Pyrenees trip that will begin in Toulouse and finish in Bagneres-de-Bigorre, a Paris finishers trip, and finally, for those up to the challenge, Etape du Tour trips (Albertville to La Toussuire and Pau to Bagneres-de-Luchon). The 2012 official route was announced on October 18. In past years, we have been in Paris at the live presentation, but this year, it was streamed live around the world and we had the benefit of being at our offices (3 am our time), ready and eager to make hotel bookings as soon as we had confirmed the stage starts and finishes. Truth be told, the route had been leaked out a week earlier and based on our decade of experience at the Tour, we had a pretty good idea of where we wanted to be for each day of the Tour. We became an official tour operator for the Tour de France in 2009 and while we enjoy benefits from this affiliation, we think some of the hyperbole used (and prices charged) by companies using 'VIP status' a little much. Although the start and finish zones can be a great place to watch the race, on certain days, it makes more sense to watch along the route where the spectacle is just as exciting (and easier to exit afterwards). Benefit from our experience at the Tour and we'll have the logistics planned. Hotels? We've secured superbly located hotels, and each of these is a distinctive property with amenities you'll appreciate after a day on your bike. Food and wine? We have planned this year's trips to ensure we dine in the best and most atmospheric restaurants in the regions. Some you may of heard of such as Cave Madeleine in Beaune; others are precious finds we share with you, such as an atmospheric auberge outside Bagnere-de-Bigorre where the chef and owner are friends of ours. A friend of mine, Mark Buckaway is putting together this trip for July 6 - July 23, 2012 staying in Limoux France (south east of Toulouse) and has some spots available for sharing a house. The 2012 events include Cape Breton Island, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. The big Cabot Trail Tour is back again, this time counter-clockwise. There are also a couple of rarely held events you will discover listed for next season, including a tour along New Brunswick's Saint John River, and the central area of Nova Scotia. The annual "Early-Bird" registration offer has been underway for a few days. See the registration areas for information on the time remaining.

[NECC] Bikes For Cuba update

BIKES (AND SHOES) FOR CUBA UPDATE

Hi Eagles

Another shipment of donated bikes and gear was just sent down to Cuba this past weekend including a nice Marinoni and Pinarello, plus a lot of other gear including 14 pair Pearl Izumi shoes. Pictures attached.

The program has expanded and we now are supplying four different school racing programs with donated bikes and gear.

To date we have shipped 85 good bikes and hope to reach 100+ by Christmas.

As usual we always can use more donated bikes and gear......PLUS it's holiday time soon, so anyone planning a Cuban holiday this winter can help out by taking a bike or two down there for us.

[NECC] Our Group Rides - yet again

WHEN IS A GROUP RIDE NOT A GROUP RIDE?

Surprise answer: when people do not ride as a group!

Here is a comment I received from one of the club's most experienced racers last weekend – and his comments apply to all of our Saturday morning groups

Hi Andrew,

I've been noticing some very poor etiquette on the Saturday rides - no idea what is going on. Guys are just not riding a decent paceline - pushing pace and riding at front with no intent to ride double paceline, riders doing interval work outs on the ride so drilling it on the hills, blowing some weaker riders out the back, forcing the entire group to slow/stop to wait/get organized. We lost a rider today and had to double back to find him.

For most of the season we have had 3 groups on Saturdays. The objective is that everyone should have an opportunity to improve by riding in the fastest group in which they are comfortable. BUT THIS ONLY WORKS IF THE GROUP RIDES AS A GROUP.

Here's a summary of some key points – but read the article as well:

- It is a group ride – it's primary purpose is endurance building (and somewhat social). It is not a race, it is not an interval session, it is not a time to show everyone how well your hill work is going.

- If the type of training ride you need to do is drilling it to everyone else, the group ride is not the place to do it.

- Continuously surging leads to all kinds of problems: one guy half wheeling the other, handlebar to hip - picking up the speed whenever the 'slower' rider tries to pull up beside them – entire line is staggered all the way back – lots of wheels/handlebars are dangerously overlapping and nobody gets a proper draft as the line is ragged/uneven and the pace is constantly changing

- We need everyone to maintain a steady pace, respect the average speed of the ride and maintain a tight double paceline, when road and traffic conditions permit. Racing is for races, interval sessions, or the Thursday hammerfest.

PLEASE read, mark, learn and inwardly digest – for everyone's safety and enjoyment!

Hi fellow Eagles,

Attached are 2 attachments from the Forest City velodrome in London. Victor Tolgyessy, Tim Dayfoot and yours truly have been going to the track once a month in the winter from November to April to break the monotony of winter training . There is a mandatory Level 1 session so that one can ride the track safely. Every year I have tried to get more riders interested in joining us and last year 5 riders came out and want to go back.

The skills that you acquire and the exhilaration of riding one of the shortest tracks in the world are not to be missed. Read the attachments and if you want to try a Level 1 session in November let me know.

Join family and friends to honour Constable Garrett Styles and his passion for riding and the local community, with a ride from Markham to Newmarket. All proceeds to benefit Victim Services of York Region. Registration opens at 7:30 am at York Regional Police District 5 Headquarters (8700 McCowan Road, Markham), with the ride starting at 8:00 am and covering approximately 40 kilometres to end at York Regional Police District 1 Headquarters (240 Prospect Street, Newmarket). or 48K point to point race in King city this Sunday. They have about 500
entrants at this point so lots of room for those who want to get into some
early fall training of a different sort. The course is 50% trail and 50%
road/path type deal.

[NECC] Centurion rider with spinal injury

A young single mother of 3 children crashed on Scenic Caves Road while training for the Centurion ride at Blue Mountain. She sustained a severe spinal cord injury.

[NECC] Eagles in Haiti

EAGLES IN HAITI – Saturday, October 1

Simon Trillwood and Deb Briggs are going to Haiti with a small team of volunteers, in November.

They will be doing some building at an orphanage where 80 children a teacher and a cook live in appalling conditions.

Attached is an invitation to a fundraising party that they are having on Saturday afternoon, this coming weekend.

It would be great if some Eagles are able to attend this party.

Consider the GOOFS rIde (aka Seniors Ride) for Geriatrics + Others Of Flexible Schedule.

1:30PM on occasional Wednesdays at Country Style, Leslie and Crowder in Newmarket.

This is a ride that happens irregularly throughout the next few months and into the winter and early spring, sometimes at short notice and dependent on weather forecasts. If you want to be on (or off) the email notification list for the GOOFS ride, reply to this email.

This coming Wednesday looks iffy for weather but we’ll see…

This not-to-be missed annual and time-honoured event will be held next Sunday in weather that is guaranteed to be as great as it is today.

Here are the details from your trusty tour guide Dave Hammond:

The Tour of the Falling leaves is set for next Sunday. Meet at the usual spot - Main & Water for a 10:00 A.M. departure. The ride will be about 60km, most of it prior to festivities. This year we will be visiting The Roast of Sharon Pub (Woodbine ave & Mt. Albert Rd. 12:00).

The ride is rain or shine, but those less hearty members may elect to meet us for lunch in the case of poor weather.
